2018 Summer Webinar Series Program Descriptions & Bio

THURSDAY, JUNE 7  |  12:00noon - 1:00pm CST
Tornado & High Wind Sheltering with Masonry
Presenter: Professor Mark McGinley

With the 2015 edition of the International Building Code (IBC) comes requirements that most schools and emergency facilities located in areas where the design wind speed for tornadoes is 250 mph, must contain a storm shelter meeting the requirements of the ICC 500, Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters. For areas that will use the 2015 IBC, this new requirement will impact the majority of new school and emergency facility construction spanning as far north as central Minnesota, as far south as southern Mississippi, and stretching to western Pennsylvania in the east and western Texas to the west.Masonry can provide safe, practical and cost effective solutions for sheltering from tornados and high wind events. In this seminar you will learn about these new shelter requirements and how to engineer masonry for the mandated wind speeds. An emphasis on the additional structural observation, inspection and peer review will be cover. The results of new tornado missile testing that has opened the doors for additional masonry shelter options.

TUESDAY, JULY 10  |  12:00noon - 1:00pm CST

About the speaker: Dr. McGinley is a structural engineer and building scientist with an excess of 25 years of research and forensic engineering practice in building systems.  Prior to joining U of L, he served 20 years at North Carolina A & T State University in the Civil, Architectural, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering Department.   He is an expert in masonry building systems, in particular, masonry building envelopes. Dr. McGinley's research has included research on the structural performance of masonry walls, water penetration experiments on envelopes and the building envelope performance of brick veneer and steel stud wall systems.  He has also been involved in, multidiscipline efforts on the evaluation of the energy systems of existing buildings and demonstration projects evaluating condensing heat exchangers and thermal mass effects of night time ventilation.

Reinforced Hollow Clay Masonry
Presenter: Jeffrey L Elder, PE, SE, LEED, AP
1 HSW/LU

This program is an introduction to Reinforced Load-Bearing Clay Masonry.  The Atlas brick is used as the structural wall and exterior finish in a single-wythe clay masonry wall assembly.  The performance characteristics of this building envelope are sufficient for any climate in the US.  Our discussion will also include structural veneer and reinforced curtain wall concepts using the Atlas brick series in various applications.

Topics:

§  Code compliance and ASTM

§  Detailing RHCM

§  Colors, textures and sizes

§  Moisture management

§  Thermal properties

§  Fire rating

§  Blast and Ballistic resistance

§  Sound Transmission rating

§  Wall Costs

§  Life Cycle Cost Analysis

§  Brick as a Curtain Wall and Structural Brick Panels incorporating unique construction methods.

About the speaker: Jeff Elder, SE, Leed AP, is the General Sales Manager for Interstate Brick. He is a graduate of BYU and has over 30 years in the industry.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 25  |  12:00noon - 1:00pm CST
3D Printing Ceramics – An Introduction
Presenter: Leslie Forehand, AIA
I HSW/LU

Ceramics, which is an advanced technology with a long history, is currently being integrated to 3D printing with robotics and other digital fabrication techniques. Of all commercially available 3D printers, ceramic 3D printers offer the most relevant applications to architecture because of its ability to scale and its existing material tradition. This presentation will review the technology and required equipment, existing workflows for product production, current applications of this technology, near future applications, material performance and benefits, as well as an overview of projects being completed at Iowa State University.

About the speaker:

Leslie Forehand, lecturer of architecture at ISU, She is a  2012 PRATT Institute - Masters of Architecture and a 2005 University of Virginia - Bachelors of Science in Architectural Design graduate with a Second Major in Studio Art. A team of four faculty and staff from Iowa State’s architecture department submitted a project in the inaugural Joan B. Calambokidis Innovation in Masonry Competition. The team, which won in the young architects and engineers category, included Forehand. Their project, “Mashrabiya 2.0,” is a 3D-printed ceramic façade that can be integrated into a building’s mechanical system to control light, airflow and privacy while offering evaporative cooling. The team was inspired by Arabic lace screens, replacing the traditional wood with 3D-printed ceramics.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 14  | 12noon - 1:00pm CST
3D Models and the Deliverables They Provide to Mason Contractors
Presenter: Fred Kinateder
1 LU

This webinar is based on Volumes I & II of the BIM Deliverables Guide for Masonry Contractors published by BIM-M.Volume I is an introduction of BIM to mason contractors and the masonry industry. Volume I is meant to be a resource for contractors. It will introduce them to softwares contractors are using. It explains how to get started in BIM, what a BIM Execution Plan is, the deliverables contractors are getting from BIM and the Return on Investment.Volume II is a series of case studies of projects that were modeled by mason contractors and third party vendors and the deliverables that contractors got from the models that helped them improve work processes and work flows.

About the speaker:

Fred has over 40 years in the masonry construction industry – over 20 as a business owner. He has been very active in BIM since its inception and spoken on the subject previously for the Masonry Institute of Iowa. He is actively involved with trade organizations such as the International Masonry Institute, Mason Contractors Association, Center for Protecting Worker’s Rights, and many others.
